iPhone not ringing when someone calls? 6 causes and fixes

A call comes in, the screen lights up, and nothing. It's almost always a setting, not a fault. Here are the six causes to check, from most common to rarest.

In short

Check, in this order: Silent Mode, an active Focus, Silence Unknown Callers, the ringtone volume, a connected Bluetooth device, and whether the number is blocked.

1. Silent Mode

On iPhones with a Ring/Silent switch on the side, showing orange means silent. On models with the Action button, you turn on Silent Mode with that button or from Control Center. A crossed-out bell shows at the top of the screen.

For someone who should always get through, even on silent: on their card, tap Edit › Ringtone and turn on Emergency Bypass.

2. A Focus is on

Do Not Disturb, Sleep or another Focus mutes the ringtone, sometimes on a schedule, without you thinking about it. Open Control Center: if a Focus is on, tap it to turn it off. In Settings › Focus, you can also choose who can still call you.

3. Unknown callers are silenced

With Silence Unknown Callers, a number that isn't in your contacts doesn't ring and goes straight to voicemail. Handy against telemarketers, annoying for a delivery driver. The setting is in Settings › Apps › Phone (on iOS 17, Settings › Phone).

4. The ringtone volume is all the way down

In Settings › Sounds & Haptics, the Ringer and Alerts slider is separate from the video volume. If it's all the way to the left, your iPhone only vibrates. See Ringtone too quiet.

5. A Bluetooth device is connected

Earbuds in their case, a car, a speaker: if your iPhone is still connected, the ringtone may go there instead of the speaker. Turn Bluetooth off for a minute from Control Center to check.

6. The number is blocked, or the ringtone is silent

If none of this works, restart your iPhone: it's rare, but a temporary sound glitch does happen.
